On August 18, 2025, operatives from the Ijede Division of the Lagos State Police Command arrested a suspected cultist and armed robber, Onamade Kayode, following reports of him threatening residents with a locally made firearm in the Sabon Kasuwa area of Abule Eko.
The swift response by the police led to the suspect’s capture in an uncompleted building, where the firearm was also recovered.
According to CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State Command, the operatives acted on complaints from the public about the suspect brandishing a gun and causing fear in the community.
Upon tracing Kayode to his hideout, the police apprehended him and recovered the weapon hidden in a toilet pipe within the building.
Investigations revealed that Kayode, who was released from prison in 2022 for cultism-related offenses, remains an active member of a cult group.
The suspect has confessed to possessing the firearm and is cooperating with the police to identify other cult members and recover additional weapons. He will face prosecution once the investigation is complete.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, praised the Ijede Division operatives for their professionalism and quick action in apprehending the suspect and securing the firearm.
He urged residents to stay law-abiding, avoid involvement in cultism and armed robbery, and continue providing valuable information to help eliminate criminal elements from communities.
