In a tragic incident in Onosa, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, three motorcycle riders, known as okada men, were shot by Nigerian police officers on Thursday night, August 28, 2025. The shooting sparked protests that blocked the Lekki-Epe Expressway, causing significant disruption in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident began when officers from Elemoro Police Station attempted to seize the riders’ motorcycles, allegedly over a bribe dispute. The riders resisted, leading to a confrontation. The police opened fire, with one rider reportedly killed instantly and two others injured and rushed to the hospital. Unconfirmed reports suggest the two injured riders later died.
The Lagos State Police Command issued a statement on August 29, 2025, providing their account. They claim six officers on routine patrol encountered an “irate mob” in Onosa early that morning. To ensure their safety, the officers used their firearms, resulting in three individuals sustaining injuries. The police say the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment, but they did not confirm any deaths.
Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh personally led a team to the scene, removing barricades and restoring traffic flow. He engaged with youth and community leaders to calm tensions and invited them for further dialogue to prevent future incidents.
The officers involved have been detained, and a “thorough and transparent” investigation is underway, according to Police Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
The police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement. A significant police presence remains in Onosa to maintain peace. BestLagos.ng will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as the investigation progresses.
