Lagos State enforcement officers stormed Justrite Supermarket in Lekki on Friday to enforce the ban on single-use plastics, including the popular red plastic cups widely used for drinking alcohol at parties and social events across the city.

The team confiscated all banned items, such as the iconic red cups, and directed the store’s management to immediately adopt eco-friendly alternatives.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the action on X, stating it followed extensive advocacy and a moratorium period to allow businesses to transition to sustainable options.

The red plastic cups, a staple at Lagos parties for beer, cocktails, and other drinks, are now among the prohibited items due to their environmental impact.

The Lagos government began fully enforcing the ban on single-use plastics, including nylon bags, styrofoam, and red plastic cups, on July 1, 2025, after announcing it earlier in the year.

Residents have noted that enforcement has been inconsistent in some areas, with sustainable alternatives sometimes hard to find. However, the action at Justrite shows the state’s commitment to reducing plastic pollution.

A video from the enforcement visit shows officers in bright vests removing rolls of plastic bags and stacks of red plastic cups from shelves and carts.

The confiscated items, including the vibrant cups often seen at social gatherings, were loaded and piled outside the store, underscoring Lagos’ push for a cleaner environment.
