Eight operatives of the Agunechemba Security outfit in Anambra State have been dismissed for brutally assaulting and publicly stripping a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, in Oba, Idemili South.
The incident, which occurred on July 23, 2025, sparked nationwide outrage after a viral video showed the operatives beating and humiliating Elobor, despite her presenting a valid NYSC identification.
Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, announced the dismissals during a press briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Awka.
He condemned the operatives’ actions as “totally outside the agency’s mandate and utterly condemnable.”
Emeakayi emphasized that the sacked operatives would be handed over to the police for prosecution, stating, “In further demonstration of our openness and readiness to be fair to everybody, we are going to take them to the police. We are not shielding anybody.”
The Anambra State Government has also settled Elobor’s medical bills, replaced her damaged valuables, such as a laptop and phone, and issued a public apology to her, her family, the NYSC, and the public.
Emeakayi clarified that the operatives were pursuing suspected cultists during a joint security operation, Operation Udo Ga-Achi, when the incident occurred.
However, he stressed that their conduct was unacceptable, and Governor Soludo’s administration would not tolerate abuse of power.
The Anambra Police Command confirmed the arrests and noted that the investigation has been delayed due to Elobor’s unavailability, but assured corps members of their commitment to justice.
The Nigerian Bar Association and NYSC have also condemned the assault, with the NBA demanding swift prosecution to deter future abuses.
