Nigerian rap icon and YBNL boss, Olamide Adedeji, has reaffirmed his commitment to authenticity and originality in music, declaring that he is not desperate for international recognition.
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, the multi-award-winning rapper explained that his success in the industry stems from one key principle, understanding and staying connected to his core audience.
According to the “Local Rapper” crooner, the secret to longevity in the ever-evolving music scene is remaining true to one’s identity rather than chasing trends or seeking validation from foreign markets.
“You have to identify your audience. Once you identify your audience, the rest of the world will catch up eventually,” Olamide said.
“So, I have to stay true to myself no matter what or where it is in this world. I’m comfortable in my skin.”
Olamide, who has built one of the most successful hip-hop empires in Africa while rapping primarily in Yoruba and Pidgin English, emphasized that his local sound is what gives him global appeal.
“I’m a Naija guy, Yoruba boy, I have H-factor and all that, and I’m proud of it,” he added with a laugh. “You just have to stay true to yourself.”
The rapper, known for blending street slang with raw storytelling, has consistently used his music to represent Nigerian culture and inspire homegrown artists to embrace their roots. Through his YBNL label, he has also played a crucial role in launching the careers of stars like Fireboy DML, Asake, and Lil Kesh, all of whom have gone on to achieve international success without abandoning their unique Nigerian sound.
Olamide’s comments have earned widespread praise on social media, with fans commending him for prioritizing authenticity over Western validation. Many described him as the “blueprint” for African artists seeking to balance local influence with global reach.
With over a decade of dominance in the Nigerian music industry and numerous hits to his name, Olamide continues to prove that staying original is not just a strategy, it’s his legacy.
