Music executive Ubi Franklin has broken his silence over viral claims that he “stole” a luxury wristwatch while in Miami, USA, for Davido’s star-studded wedding over the weekend.
The allegations, which surfaced on social media on Wednesday after being reported by a blog, quickly gained traction and sparked heated conversations online. However, Ubi has now set the record straight, insisting the story is false and misleading.
Taking to his X account, he issued a detailed statement to explain the events that led to the misunderstanding.
“I am currently aware of the recent circulation on social media linking my name to an alleged theft. I wish to make it clear that these allegations are completely false and misleading,” he began.
He revealed that the timing of the rumour could not have been more sensitive, as he had just returned from attending the wedding and was now preparing for his sister’s funeral.
According to Ubi, while in Miami, an individual named Benny approached him with an offer to sell a wristwatch. After reviewing the item and confirming its previous ownership, Ubi decided against the purchase to avoid potential complications, a decision he said he communicated clearly.
However, during the wedding church service, Benny sent another wristwatch through his brother, which Ubi agreed to buy and paid for in full.
“Given the busy circumstances surrounding the wedding, I was in possession of both wristwatches and wore the one he sent to me through his brother,” Ubi explained.
Following the celebrations, Ubi had to leave Miami immediately to finalise arrangements for his sister’s upcoming funeral. While on his flight, he received a call from Benny about the first wristwatch.
“I want to state clearly: I am not a thief. I have never stolen from anyone in my life. I purchased a wristwatch and paid in full from Benny,” he stressed.
Ubi added that Benny himself had publicly debunked the theft rumour earlier in the day, yet the false narrative continued to spread.
The music executive’s statement comes as he continues to mourn a personal loss while navigating a wave of online scrutiny.
