Residents jumped from apartment windows after smoke trapped them inside during a destructive suburban fire near Hickory Street and Walnut Avenue.

A severe apartment fire caused extensive damage to a residential building in suburban Hanover Park.

Emergency crews responded to the scene of the blaze near the intersection of Hickory Street and Walnut Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to find thick smoke and active flames engulfing portions of the structure.

Several building residents reported being trapped inside as smoke rapidly filled the hallways and units.

Trapped tenants were forced to leap from their apartment windows to escape the advancing flames.

One resident, identified as Allison, recalled the terrifying moment smoke began seeping under her front door.

“There was smoke coming underneath the door, and I look out the window and there are fire people everywhere,” Allison said.

She immediately opened her window to call out to the emergency personnel gathered on the ground below.

“I open the window and asked if it was safe to go out the front window and they said to jump,” Allison stated.

The resident then leaped from the window to safety, noting that “they didn’t catch me.”

It remains unclear which floor Allison was jumping from when she made her escape.

Fire crews deployed multiple hose lines and equipment to suppress the blaze and keep it from spreading to adjacent properties.

Video from the scene captures firefighters actively working to extinguish hot spots throughout the damaged building.

Local authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the total number of injuries sustained in the fire.

Investigating officials have not yet determined the origin or cause of the destructive blaze.

Local fire officials advise apartment residents to ensure smoke detectors are functional and maintain clear secondary exit pathways.

Hanover Park fire investigators remain on the scene as the inquiry into the cause of the fire continues.
