Thieves targeted a stopped freight train on Chicago’s West Side Tuesday morning, leaving a massive mess across the tracks and halting Metra commuter rail service.

The theft occurred along the rail line near 18th Street and South Western Avenue.
Debris Scattered Across Tracks Near Western Avenue
Video showed open cardboard boxes, packing materials, and looted cargo debris strewn along the train tracks.
As a direct result of the breach and police investigation, Metra halted BNSF Line trains operating near the Western Avenue station.
Commuters experienced extensive delays throughout the morning rush as rail workers and law enforcement moved to clear the right-of-way.

Ongoing Pattern of Freight Train Theft
Rail cargo burglaries have repeatedly plagued freight corridors on Chicago’s West Side in recent years.
In October 2024, a similar daylight heist occurred in the Austin neighborhood, where thieves spent hours pulling flat-screen TVs from freight containers in front of waiting vehicles.
Investigators have not announced any arrests in Tuesday morning’s incident as rail police and local authorities work to clear the line and secure the cargo.
