A fire has broken out at a six-storey building, Afriland Tower, on Broad Street, Lagos Island. The incident, which was reported at 13:38 hours, prompted a rapid response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Fire crews from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations were immediately deployed to the scene.
According to Deputy Controller General, Ogabi Olajide, the fire started in the inverter room located in the building’s basement.
Smoke quickly spread throughout the structure, reaching multiple floors and causing panic. A full evacuation of all occupants was initiated as firefighters arrived to contain the blaze.
The timely response and coordinated efforts of the fire crews have successfully brought the fire under control.
Videos shared online show smoke pouring from windows and people climbing out to escape. The tower houses businesses, including a United Bank for Africa (UBA) branch.
An eyewitness told Bestlagos.ng about the swift action of the emergency responders, noting that the situation was doused and the panic was calmed shortly after their arrival.
