Residents in Festac Town’s 11 Road H Close woke up to a shocking sight on Friday morning. Criminals smashed the rear window of a white Toyota Camry parked in the area. The incident happened because the close no longer has a security house, which authorities demolished recently.
The demolition took place as part of a larger cleanup effort in Festac Town by the Lagos State government. Officials cleared waste and removed illegal structures to improve the environment.
However, residents claim the process was unfair. In close A through E on 11 Road, security houses and attached shops stayed intact, but in H Close, workers tore down the security house, forcing the guards to leave.
Without security, the area became an easy target for thieves. The vandalized car shows broken glass scattered inside, with the back seat visible through the large hole in the window.
One resident, Rotimi Toriola, posted about the issue online. He called the demolition a “superficial job” done just for show. Toriola urged the Amuwo Odofin Local Government to fix the problem quickly.
“This left our close open to criminals,” he wrote. “We plead with authorities to take bold steps and correct this.”
The cleanup started earlier this month, led by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in partnership with local agencies. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab praised the work for making Festac cleaner, but complaints like this one point to possible inconsistencies in how rules were applied.
Residents worry that without action, more crimes could occur. They want the government to rebuild the security house or provide other protection. Amuwo Odofin officials have not yet responded to the pleas.
