A dispute over a CTA bus seat on West 63rd Street escalated into gunfire Wednesday afternoon, leaving a 57-year-old man critically wounded and a 65-year-old home care aide injured by a single bullet.
Chicago Police are searching for two suspects after a dispute over a seat on a Chicago Transit Authority bus escalated into a double shooting in the Englewood neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:40 p.m. on September 30, 2026, on a CTA bus in the 300 block of West 63rd Street inside the Chicago Police Department’s 7th District.

According to police sources and victim statements, the violence broke out when a male passenger refused to move over to allow a woman to sit down.
The dispute may have started because the seat was wet from rain.

Another male passenger accompanying the woman intervened, causing a physical altercation to erupt inside the crowded bus.
During the struggle, a single gunshot was fired, according to police sources.
That single round struck two bystanders who were not involved in the original dispute.

The gunfire hit a 57-year-old male passenger in his left side between his ribs and hip, leaving him in critical condition.
The bullet also struck 65-year-old Gwendolyn Jackson in her left arm as she was returning home from her job as a home care aide.
Both victims were immediately rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Jackson was later released from the hospital, though medical staff determined it was safer to leave the bullet lodged inside her arm to prevent further tissue damage.
Speaking to CBS NEWS after the incident, Jackson recalled feeling the impact while trying to stand up as the men fought directly above her.

Detectives from CPD Area 1 are actively searching for the two suspects who fled the transit vehicle immediately following the shooting.
Investigators describe the gunman as a Black male between 18 and 20 years old, standing 6’0″ to 6’2″ tall and weighing 165 to 180 pounds, wearing grey pants, a black hooded jacket, and black shoes.

The female suspect is described as a Black female around 20 years old, 5’8″ to 5’10” tall, with long red braids, wearing a black zip-up hoodie, grey pants with a black Nike logo, and white shoes with black soles.
The violent outburst on the West 63rd Street route has renewed fierce debate regarding passenger safety across the Chicago transit system.

Keith Hill, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 241, stated that the union has repeatedly requested an increased police presence along the 63rd Street corridor from Cottage Grove Avenue to Western Avenue.
Hill noted that crime rates have dropped on other CTA routes where Cook County Sheriff’s deputies maintain a visible presence.

The CTA referred all inquiries regarding safety protocols and crime prevention to the Chicago Police Department, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Chicago Police urge anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspects or surveillance footage from West 63rd Street to submit an anonymous tip at CPDTip.com.
