Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has honoured the memory of his late colleague, Sound Sultan, in the visuals for his trending single,10 Kilo.
The vibrant video, directed by Director Pink, features striking scenes where plus-size models dance against a backdrop adorned with Sound Sultan’s picture. The imagery is a nod to Sultan’s 2013 hit, Orobo, which also celebrated plus-size women and later spawned a remix with Flavour that dominated Nigerian and West African airwaves.
Davido’s 10 Kilo carries thematic similarities to Orobo, with lyrics that promote body positivity and confidence among plus-size women. This deliberate parallel appears to be both a creative homage and a heartfelt salute to the late music icon’s legacy.
Since Sound Sultan’s passing from cancer in July 2021, many Nigerian artists including 2Face Idibia, Burna Boy, Spyro, and Sean Tizzle have paid tribute to the singer, who is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Afrobeats. Known for timeless hits like Jagbajantis, Natural Something, Ole, Kokose, and Very Good Bad Guy, Sound Sultan left an indelible mark on the music industry, blending social commentary with infectious rhythms.
Davido’s gesture not only reignites memories of Sound Sultan’s artistry but also reaffirms the enduring influence of his music on today’s Afrobeats sound.
