A prominent Chicago contractor died Tuesday after a shooting near the United Center.
The victim was identified by his family as 67-year-old Jerry Lewis.
The attack happened just before 1 p.m. on the city’s Near West Side.
Lewis was walking between offices near West Madison and South Leavitt streets when the violence erupted.
Two gunmen emerged and opened fire on the businessman, according to his family.
The gunmen shot Lewis in the head during the encounter.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to Stroger Hospital.
Doctors later pronounced him dead at the hospital, according to police reports.
Lewis was a well-known figure in the Chicago construction and development industry.
His family told ABC7 he played a major role in Project 1901.
Project 1901 is a $7-billion plan to develop the area surrounding the United Center.
His wife, Zandra Lewis, said her husband wanted everyone to succeed and “make it.”
Lewis also spent his time mentoring small businesses throughout the city.
He worked closely with groups like Pink Hats Construction and Development.
His son, Zachery Lewis, said the two attackers appeared out of nowhere before shooting his father.
Chicago police stated that investigators are currently questioning two people of interest.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the shooting.
The Cook County Medical Examiner has not released an official identification as of Wednesday morning.
The investigation into the shooting remains active.
