Nigerian highlife legend, Bright Chimezie, has officially joined the roster of Sony Music Publishing (SMP) West Africa, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. The announcement comes just two weeks after his much-publicized meeting with Afrobeats superstar, Davido.
Sony Music made the big reveal over the weekend via its official Instagram page, celebrating the induction of the music veteran into their growing family of influential African artists.
In a post that quickly garnered attention across social media, the global music publishing giant wrote: “SMP is honored to announce the introduction of the Legendary and extraordinary Bright Chimezie into the family. The creator of the Zigma sound has joined the Sony Music Publishing (SMP) West Africa.”
Bright Chimezie, renowned for his unique Zigma sound; a fusion of highlife, traditional Igbo rhythms, and social commentary has long been considered a pioneer in Nigerian music. His influence continues to span generations, and his recent connection with Davido appears to have reignited public interest in his iconic discography.
The partnership with Sony Music comes shortly after Davido openly credited Bright Chimezie’s work as inspiration behind his hit song “With You,” featuring Omah Lay. Their meeting in May sparked speculation about a possible collaboration or mentorship, and now, with this deal, Chimezie’s legacy seems poised for a fresh wave of global appreciation.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Davido’s name has been linked to a Sony deal. Just days before the Chimezie announcement, Mayorkun, a former DMW signee, revealed that Davido played a key role in helping him land a contract with Sony Music as well.
With Bright Chimezie now part of the Sony Music family, fans and industry watchers are eager to see how the legendary artist’s timeless sound will be preserved, promoted, and possibly reimagined for a new generation.
