A brave bystander tackled a gunman during a shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, on December 14, 2025.
The attack targeted a Hanukkah celebration and killed at least 10 people, with many others injured. Two gunmen opened fire, but one was shot dead by police at the scene.
The other, identified as Naveed Akram, 24, from Bonnyrigg, was shot, arrested, and taken into custody for treatment.
The hero, an unnamed man wearing a white shirt and black pants, crept up behind a parked car in the Campbell Parade car park. He pounced on the gunman, who wore a black shirt and white pants and carried a black bag.
The bystander wrapped his arms around the shooter, wrestled the rifle away, and made the gunman fall backwards. He then picked up the weapon, pointed it at the gunman, placed it against a tree, and backed away. This act likely saved many lives as the gunman had been firing into the crowd near two bins.
Videos of the incident spread quickly on social media, showing people running for safety near a playground as shots rang out.
The firearms were semi-automatic, with magazines left on the ground. Police are checking a suspected bomb at the scene, possibly placed under a pedestrian bridge.
Akram’s home in Bonnyrigg, owned by his family for a year, is under police raid. Officials have not shared motives yet, but the attack has sparked worries about antisemitism. The investigation goes on.
