SAGAMU, Nigeria – Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has survived a fatal car accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, though two people tragically lost their lives in the crash.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma area close to Sagamu, Ogun State.
How the Accident Happened
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the 36-year-old boxer was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep toward his family home in Sagamu for the New Year celebrations.
Preliminary reports suggest the Lexus was traveling at high speed when it attempted to overtake another vehicle.
The driver lost control and crashed into a stationary commercial truck parked by the roadside.
The FRSC confirmed that five adult males were involved in the crash.

Two people were confirmed dead at the scene.

Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries and was seen in social media videos appearing shaken and grimacing while exiting the wreckage.

Two others escaped the accident unhurt.
Police confirmed that Joshua was seated behind the driver at the time of the impact.
His security detail, traveling in a separate vehicle behind him, witnessed the crash and assisted in the immediate aftermath.
The Ogun State Police Command and FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within minutes.
The injured, including Joshua, were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, while the deceased were taken to the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered a full investigation into the crash.
Family Reaction
A relative of the boxer told the BBC that the news has come as a “total shock” to the family in Sagamu.
“We were expecting him home for the New Year,” the relative said, while offering prayers for the families of those who died.
Joshua had been in Nigeria following his recent bout with Jake Paul on December 19.
Just hours before the crash, he had shared a video on Instagram playing table tennis, appearing in high spirits.
