Area One homicide investigators apprehended 22-year-old Jaylen McDaniel over a year after a violent store ambush left one dead and multiple people wounded.

Members of the Area One Homicide Investigation Support Team took Jaylen McDaniel into custody on October 6, 2026.
Officers located and apprehended McDaniel in the 2700 block of South California Boulevard.
McDaniel maintains a listed home address in the 1500 block of East 76th Place, according to the Chicago police.
Detectives identified McDaniel as one of the gunmen who opened fire inside a Woodlawn business on June 28, 2025.

The violent afternoon incident unfolded shortly before 4:00 p.m. in the 800 block of East 63rd Street.
That commercial location falls within the boundaries of the Chicago Police Department’s 3rd District.

Two armed individuals walked inside the neighborhood establishment and pulled out handguns.
The offenders fired multiple shots toward several customers gathered inside the building.

A 31-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the sudden barrage.
Paramedics transported the victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Medical personnel pronounced the 31-year-old victim dead shortly after his arrival.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the fatal shooting victim as Keenan Terrell Campbell.

A 25-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the incident.
Emergency medical workers transported the 25-year-old victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
A 40-year-old male victim suffered a graze wound from the gunfire.
That victim drove himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center for medical treatment.
Flying glass from shattered storefront windows injured a 6-year-old boy standing nearby.
Paramedics transported the 6-year-old child to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition.

The two original gunmen fled the scene immediately after discharging their handguns.
Area One detectives gathered physical evidence and reviewed commercial security video to identify the suspects.
Cook County prosecutors approved multiple felony counts against McDaniel following his arrest.
McDaniel faces one felony count of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting.
Prosecutors also filed three felony counts of aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm.
McDaniel faces three additional felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm from a vehicle or near a school.

Court records show McDaniel previously faced arrest in January 2026 on stolen vehicle and firearm charges.
McDaniel detention hearing is on October 8, 2026, at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse.
