A 47-year-old bicyclist was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition after a sedan driver blew past a stop sign and struck him Monday evening in Chatham.
A 47-year-old bicyclist is fighting for his life following a Monday evening crash caused by a driver who failed to yield at a stop sign on the city’s South Side.
The collision occurred at approximately 5:22 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Blackstone Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood within the 6th Police District.
According to the Chicago Police Department, an adult male was driving a gray sedan westbound on 82nd Street.
Investigating officers determined the driver of the gray sedan allegedly ignored a posted stop sign at the intersection.
At the same time, the 47-year-old male cyclist was traveling northbound on a bicycle and turned westbound onto 82nd Street.
The gray sedan struck the bicyclist head-on, throwing the rider into the roadway.
Paramedics with the Chicago Fire Department responded to the scene and located the cyclist suffering from severe physical trauma.
Emergency medical crews rushed the 47-year-old man to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the gray sedan was not injured in the impact and remained at the scene.
Responding officers issued multiple traffic citations to the driver of the sedan following the initial investigation.
Police officials have not publicly released the name of the driver or the injured cyclist.
Area Two detectives and CPD traffic unit officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
