At least 12 people have lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident that occurred on Friday night along the Ejule–Enugu highway in Kogi State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic and deeply unfortunate. The Kogi State Sector Commander, Tenimu Etuku, disclosed that one of the victims was a child.
According to Etuku, the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. at Iboko community in Idah Local Government Area. It involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Romchi Mass Transit and a faulty vehicle that had been parked on the road.
The bus was reportedly travelling from Abuja to the eastern part of the country when it collided with the stationary truck, allegedly due to overspeeding.
FRSC officials rescued the two injured passengers and rushed them to Mercy of Jesus Hospital in Ejule for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were subsequently deposited at the morgue.
Etuku urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly during the festive season, warning against speeding and reckless driving.
“As we celebrate this yuletide, drivers must be extra careful and strictly obey traffic regulations to prevent avoidable crashes and the loss of precious lives,” he said.
