Nigerian music star Duncan Mighty has stirred conversation online after claiming that he and other Port Harcourt artistes laid the foundation for the modern Afrobeats sound dominating the world today.
In an interview with Hip TV, the “Port Harcourt First Son” argued that the city’s unique slangs, rhythms and vocal style have become embedded in today’s Afrobeats, thanks to influential acts like himself, Timaya, Burna Boy and Omah Lay.
“In almost every Afrobeats song today, you can hear Port Harcourt influence, especially the Ikwerre slangs,” he said.
“You can’t hear any Afrobeats song now without the spice of Port Harcourt. Almost every track carries that flavour. I, Burna Boy, Timaya, Omah Lay and the Port Harcourt sound built the foundation of today’s Afrobeats.”
His comments have since sparked mixed reactions, with some music lovers accusing him of exaggerating the city’s contribution, while others agreed that Port Harcourt artistes have played a major role in shaping the genre’s evolution.
The debate continues across social media, with fans dissecting just how much influence the Garden City truly holds in the Afrobeats wave.
