Music icon D’banj has shed fresh light on the breakup of Mo’Hits Records, stating that the decision to split was entirely initiated by his longtime partner and producer, Don Jazzy.
Mo’Hits, once one of Nigeria’s most influential record labels, disbanded in 2012 after Don Jazzy publicly cited an internal disagreement with D’banj. But in a new episode of the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, D’banj revealed that the separation wasn’t his idea.
According to him, Don Jazzy was “100 per cent” responsible for the decision to part ways.
“If I were to go back in time, I wouldn’t change anything about my relationship with Don Jazzy, especially because the idea to separate wasn’t mine. It came from Jazzy, 100 per cent. That’s why we never had issues,” he said.
D’banj also disclosed that Don Jazzy handed him full ownership of his catalogue, along with about ten unreleased songs, when the duo went their separate ways.
He noted that although Don Jazzy had his reservations at the time, he believed it was necessary to pursue global recognition, a move he said eventually paid off with the international success of Oliver Twist, the last record they released together.
While stressing that he has no regrets and believes the split was destined, the singer admitted he misses collaborating with Don Jazzy.
Their separation marked the end of an era but laid the foundation for both stars to build new chapters in their careers, Don Jazzy with Mavin Records and D’banj with DB Records.
