Ace Nigerian rapper Olamide has opened up about the profound influence that late Indigenous rap icon Dagrin had on his career and the Nigerian hip-hop scene as a whole.
In a recent video interview, the YBNL boss credited Dagrin’s critically acclaimed album, ‘C.E.O’, as a major source of inspiration, especially during moments of creative struggle. He revealed that he often turns to the album whenever he faces “writer’s block,” finding motivation in its raw lyricism and energy.
“Dagrin’s ‘C.E.O’ album is a timeless project. That’s the only rap album almost everybody in the South West can sing word for word. Dagrin influenced a lot of rappers. Whenever we need motivation, we would go and listen to his album,” Olamide said.
Dagrin, who tragically passed away in an auto crash in April 2010, left behind a legacy that continues to resonate with the next generation of rappers. His music, celebrated for its authentic storytelling and streetwise lyricism, has grown in popularity posthumously, cementing his status as a pioneer of Indigenous rap in Nigeria.
Olamide’s tribute underscores the lasting impact of Dagrin on the South West rap scene, with many artists citing him as a key inspiration for their craft. The late rapper’s influence, as Olamide notes, goes beyond entertainment, it serves as a guiding force for creativity and resilience in the industry.
