Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter, Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has achieved a major career milestone as her chart-topping single, ‘Duduke’, has officially been certified Gold in New Zealand after surpassing 15,000 unit sales.
This marks Simi’s first-ever international certification, a remarkable feat that cements her status as one of the leading female voices in Afrobeats and Afropop.
Originally released in 2022, ‘Duduke’ quickly became an anthem of love and motherhood, with Simi serenading her unborn child in the heartfelt track. The accompanying music video, which featured her proudly showing off her baby bump, resonated deeply with fans around the world.
The song also birthed the viral ‘Duduke Challenge’, where fans, including expectant mothers created their own videos to celebrate the beauty of life and anticipation.
Speaking in a recent interview, Simi revealed that many fans fondly call her daughter, Adejare, “Duduke” the inspiration behind the song. While she noted that the nickname isn’t offensive, she expressed a preference for people to use her daughter’s real name.
With this Gold certification, ‘Duduke’ joins the growing list of Nigerian hits breaking international boundaries, proving once again that Afropop’s emotional depth and universal appeal know no limits.
