Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has humorously weighed in on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s reported plans for possible military action in Nigeria, urging him not to disrupt the country’s much-loved festive season known as Detty December.
In a spirited Instagram Live session, the outspoken saxophonist and son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti used satire to address the controversial reports that Trump had directed U.S. military officials to prepare plans for intervention in Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians.
Seun, known for his fearless social commentary, joked that Trump should “wait until after Detty December” before considering any form of chaos. He said Nigerians had endured enough hardship and deserved to enjoy their end-of-year festivities in peace.
“Don’t you dare come during detty December. After then, you can bomb as you like. You can’t come during Jesus birthday,” the singer said.
The singer continued his satirical take by mockingly listing elite neighborhoods in Lagos and Abuja as “possible targets,” referencing places like Banana Island, Ikoyi, and Asokoro all known for their affluent residents.
“I can give you address. Ikoyi and VI. For Abuja, bomb Asokoro. Just don’t come in December.”
He then quipped that if things ever got serious, he would “relocate to Brazil and start a new Afrobeat movement there.”
Beyond the humor, however, Seun’s remarks carried a serious undertone. He criticized Nigeria’s political elite, arguing that decades of corruption, mismanagement, and neglect had eroded the connection between citizens and the state.
Fans on social media praised Seun’s ability to blend humor with activism, saying his satirical tone captured the frustrations of ordinary Nigerians while still keeping the conversation lighthearted.
Known for using his platform to challenge authority and advocate for social change, Seun Kuti continues his father’s legacy, fusing music, activism, and political commentary to provoke reflection and dialogue on Africa’s most pressing issues.
