Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about his ongoing spiritual journey, revealing that he converted from Christianity to Islam in a personal quest for truth, yet still feels unfulfilled.
Speaking in a recent interview with popular streamer Playboymax, the Afrofusion star reflected on his struggles to find clarity and meaning through religion.
“Growing up, I was a Christian and then I converted to Islam. It’s like I’ve studied it all, but I’m still out here trying to find out what is really going on, you know? The more I research, the more confused I get,” Burna Boy admitted.
The artist, known for weaving deep messages about life, spirituality, and identity into his music, said his search for truth has been both enlightening and frustrating. He emphasized that his exploration isn’t tied to any specific doctrine but rather a genuine desire to understand the divine beyond man-made boundaries.
“I’m still searching,” he continued. “It’s a lifelong journey for me, I just want to know what’s real.”
Burna Boy’s revelation has since sparked a wave of online conversations, with fans commending his honesty and openness about a topic many shy away from.
It’s not the first time a Nigerian artist has spoken about religious transformation. Earlier this year, singer 9ice disclosed that he converted to Ifa, a traditional Yoruba faith, after suffering what he described as a “spiritual attack” that left him bedridden for six months.
While reactions to Burna Boy’s statement have been mixed, many agree it highlights the growing trend of artists confronting personal and spiritual realities in public, using their platforms not just for entertainment, but for deep reflection and dialogue.
