Popular Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, better known as AY, has issued a strong warning to fans and social media users not to be deceived by the glitz and glamour often portrayed by celebrities online.
In a candid video shared on his Instagram page on Thursday, the award-winning comedian spoke about the growing culture of deception and pressure on social media, describing many of the luxurious lifestyles flaunted by influencers and entertainers as “borrowed and staged for likes.”
AY explained that behind the designer outfits, luxury cars, and vacation photos, many celebrities are struggling to maintain appearances and often rely on borrowed possessions to sustain their image.
“Many of these celebrities you envy are living on borrowed wigs, borrowed outfits, and borrowed lifestyles,” AY said. “Some take pictures in hotel lobbies and call them their new homes, while others pose with cars that don’t belong to them. Social media is like a movie set, not everything you see online is real.”
The veteran comedian, who has built a career spanning over two decades in comedy, film, and event promotion, described social media as a “make-believe stage” where people edit their lives to project false success stories.
He advised fans to avoid unhealthy comparisons, noting that constantly measuring one’s worth against online illusions often leads to frustration, envy, and depression.
“Don’t let someone’s borrowed reality make you feel like you’re not doing enough,” AY continued. “Everyone has their own journey. Grow at your own pace, live simply, and be content with what you have.”
AY’s message has since sparked conversations online, with many followers applauding him for speaking out on an issue that affects both celebrities and fans alike.
His post adds to the ongoing discourse about authenticity and mental health in the digital age, reminding Nigerians that “not all that glitters on social media is gold.”
