Global music star Akon is facing turmoil in his personal life as his wife, Tomeka Thaim, has officially filed for divorce just days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary.
Court documents filed on Thursday, September 11, reveal that Thaim is seeking to end her marriage to the Senegalese-American singer, citing irreconcilable differences. The filing comes only four days before the couple would have celebrated nearly three decades together.
According to the documents, Thaim is requesting joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey, but is seeking primary physical custody, with visitation rights granted to Akon. She also asked the court for spousal support, while simultaneously requesting that Akon not be awarded any spousal support in return.
The couple’s date of separation was marked as “TBD,” leaving uncertainty around when the marital rift began.
Akon, born Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, has yet to publicly comment on the divorce filing. Known for global hits like Lonely, Smack That, and Don’t Matter, the singer has often drawn attention for his unconventional views on relationships.
In a 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show, Akon openly embraced polygamy and revealed he has nine children. Adding to the speculation surrounding his personal life, musician Amirror claimed in 2023 that she was one of Akon’s four wives.
Despite his stance, Akon and Thaim had maintained a long-term union, marrying in 1996. Their marriage now appears to have reached its breaking point, casting a shadow over what should have been a milestone anniversary.
