Illegal refuse dumping has worsened the flooding situation in Ikorodu following a recent heavy rainfall. Nollywood actor Saidi Balogun has publicly criticized Lagos residents for blocking drainage channels, calling their actions a major cause of the flood.
In a video posted on Instagram, as reported by BestLagos, the actor stated that many of the city’s problems, especially flooding, are self-inflicted. He pointed out that people throwing waste into gutters and drainage channels directly contribute to the issue.
Balogun recalled seeing similar acts in Maryland, where residents were dumping trash into gutters. He insisted that the actions of residents make flooding worse and that people are partly responsible for the damage they complain about.
“We are the government, and we are the ones doing this to ourselves,” he said. “Because they dumped refuse into the gutter, look at Ikorodu road, people have blocked the gutter.”
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of poor waste disposal and its negative impact on Lagos’s flood-prone areas, emphasizing the need for a change in public behavior.
