Lagos State’s contingent of 416 athletes and 80 technical officials left for Asaba, Delta State, on August 27, 2025, to compete in the 9th National Youth Games, set to run from August 29 to September 6. The team is ready to showcase their skills and make Lagos proud at the national event.
Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, spoke to the athletes before their departure, emphasizing the state’s commitment to excellence. “We’ve boosted rewards for our athletes, coaches, and technical crew to inspire top performances,” Fatodu said. He credited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing strong support to improve athletes’ skills and performance.
After securing 11 qualification slots at the South-West Zonal Eliminations in Ibadan, Team Lagos is not slowing down. Fatodu highlighted the state’s focus on sports like athletics, swimming, boxing, and weightlifting, aiming for multiple podium finishes. “Our athletes are motivated and ready to shine,” he added.
Lagos is also tackling age cheating in football by ensuring all athletes compete in the correct age categories, using careful analysis to maintain fairness. “Our strategy is built on integrity and talent development,” Fatodu explained. He expressed confidence that Lagos will reinforce its reputation as Nigeria’s sports powerhouse.
“Lagosians should expect nothing less than excellence,” Fatodu said. “Our athletes will entertain, perform brilliantly, and inspire the entire sports community.” With a strong team and clear strategy, Lagos aims to dominate and continue leading in sports development across Nigeria.
The 9th National Youth Games officially begin on August 29 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, promising exciting competitions and a chance to spot Nigeria’s future sports stars.
