Unknown assailants assassinated Rev. Mark Okemuefuna Okonkwo, popularly known as Ogazi Nri, on August 17, 2025, while he was heading to his church grounds in Anambra State.
The former Vice Chairman of Uruofolo village and Nri Security chief was dastardly shot dead by the attackers, leaving the community in shock.
Rev. Okonkwo was a powerful icon within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement in Anambra.
In 2017, he hosted IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at his grounds in Nri, Anambra, drawing significant attention to the cause.
He also owned the venue where Anambra State IPOB family members gather annually on May 30 to commemorate events related to their movement.
Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators, and investigations are ongoing. Supporters have expressed grief online, calling for justice and vowing to honor his legacy.
