A heartbreaking accident has left a community in mourning after a 45-year-old electrician lost his life while trying to fix power cables in the Shasha area of Lagos State. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the details of the incident, highlighting the dangers of working with electricity without proper safety measures.
According to CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer, the incident happened on Saturday, August 10, around 11:30 a.m. The electrician was attempting to reconnect electricity cables to an electric pole when he was electrocuted.
“This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks involved in such tasks,” Hundeyin said in a statement released on Sunday.
Police were quickly alerted to the scene, and detectives rushed to help. The victim was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Sadly, doctors confirmed his death shortly after arrival.
The police have launched an investigation to understand exactly what led to the accident. They are looking into factors like whether safety protocols were followed or if there were any equipment issues. No further details about the victim’s identity have been released to respect the family’s privacy.
This incident comes amid ongoing concerns about power outages and illegal reconnections in parts of Lagos, where residents sometimes take matters into their own hands due to frequent blackouts. Experts advise that only certified professionals with proper gear should handle electrical work to prevent such tragedies.
The Lagos State Police Command urges the public to report any electrical hazards immediately and avoid DIY fixes that could endanger lives. As the investigation continues, the community hopes for answers and better safety awareness to prevent future losses.
