Two devastating road accidents along the Lekki-Epe Expressway have left five people dead and five others seriously injured, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The crashes, caused by excessive speeding and disregard for traffic rules, highlight the urgent need for safer driving practices.
The first incident occurred early in the morning at Abijo Bus Stop, under the pedestrian bridge on the Epe-bound corridor.
A Mitsubishi pick-up van (registration: AKD 733 JM), traveling at high speed, lost control and slammed into parked construction equipment.
The collision killed four occupants, three men and one woman, instantly. LASTMA operatives rescued three other women from the wreckage, who were stabilized and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force’s Eleko Division for medical treatment.
In a separate crash overnight near the Frajend Group in Bogije, a Toyota Escort Jeep, also speeding, collided with a stationary Dangote truck.
The driver of the SUV died on impact, while two passengers were seriously injured. LASTMA’s rescue team carefully extracted the survivors, who were then transferred to the Elemoro Police Division for urgent medical care.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
“These accidents are a tragic reminder of the dangers of reckless driving,” he said.
He urged all drivers to respect speed limits and traffic regulations, noting that the Lagos State Government has invested heavily in road safety measures like signage and speed limiters.
Bakare-Oki praised LASTMA’s rescue teams for their swift and professional response, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to protecting road users.
Authorities are calling on drivers to prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
