After taking a year-long break from dropping a body of work, Nigerian pop singer Guchi returned in full force with the unveiling of her new EP, “No Skips, Just Feelings”, at an exclusive listening party held on Friday night at Citizen Restobar, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The intimate event, hosted by energetic radio personality Do2tun, brought together music lovers, media professionals, and industry stakeholders who gathered to get a first listen to the seven-track project; a deeply personal EP that Guchi says captures “7 different emotions in 1.”
“You feel heartbreak, you feel power, you feel love, and every other thing in between,” the singer said as she introduced the EP to the crowd. “I want to get you locked up — whatever you’re feeling, it’s all in the EP.”
With tracks like “Your Type,” “Butterfly,” “Balance,” “Tsunami (Oh Baby),” “Intentional,” “Choose You,” and “Final Bus Stop”, No Skips, Just Feelings is a solo statement, intentionally free of features that Guchi says fully represents her growth and truth as an artiste.
“Last year, I recorded a full project. I listened to it and said, ‘This is not me,’ so I didn’t release anything. This year, I wanted to drop something that is 100% me,” she explained.
The EP’s opener, “Your Type,” is a self-affirmation anthem. Guchi says it was written for every girl to feel beautiful just the way they are — “Whether you’re tall, fat, dark, or fair.”
One of the more sentimental tracks, “Butterfly,” taps into the memory of someone special, while “Tsunami” was born out of a calm and happy state of mind, a celebration of pure love from family and her close-knit team.
“It wasn’t about a man. It was just about the love I feel from those around me,” she clarified, reflecting on the headspace she was in during the recording.
She also addressed the pressure artists often face to constantly reinvent their sound.
“Everyone expects your next song not to sound like the last, but sometimes it will — because that’s who you are. That’s your sound,” she said. “What keeps me going is the thought: what happens to those people who say ‘Guchi, love you’?”
Known for her distinct voice and vibrant style, Guchi has often been compared to other Nigerian female artistes, something she dismisses with confidence.
“There shouldn’t be comparisons at all. I sound the way I sound. I find myself as a unique person amid the comparisons,” she stated boldly.
One line that particularly stands out for her on the album is from “Balance” — “Even if my brother na Ronaldo, I go dey work for my dollar.” It’s a powerful reflection of her grit and refusal to lean on anyone’s fame or privilege.
To cap the evening, Guchi delivered a heartfelt performance of the songs, bringing her emotions to life on stage and reaffirming her place as one of Nigeria’s most promising pop voices.
With No Skips, Just Feelings, Guchi has made it clear: she’s back, unfiltered and unapologetically herself.
