Fast-rising Nigerian singer and songwriter, Anthony Ebuka Victor, widely known as Victony, has shared a deeply personal story about how a life-threatening accident in 2021 became a turning point not just in his music journey but also in winning over his parents’ support.

During a candid interview on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the ‘Soweto’ crooner opened up about the early days of his career and the challenges he faced trying to convince his parents that music was more than just a hobby.

“My parents were not cool with me doing music from the jump. They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive of it,” he revealed.

The 23-year-old singer disclosed that his parents had envisioned a different path for him, one rooted in academics and engineering. At the time, music was not a viable career option in their eyes.

“They hoped I’d finish school and become an engineer,” he added.

However, everything changed in April 2021 when Victony was involved in a tragic car accident that claimed one life and left three others injured. The incident left the artist severely hurt and confined to a wheelchair for months.

The outpouring of love and support from fans and fellow musicians across social media played a crucial role in changing his parents’ perspective. From trending hashtags like #PrayForVictony to heartfelt messages from strangers, the accident became a wake-up call for his family.

“But when I had my accident in 2021 and they saw how much impact I had on people, how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony’, they realised my music career meant a lot to me and just let me do what I wanted,” Victony recounted.

The young artist, who shot to fame through his breakout collaboration with Mayorkun on the 2021 hit track ‘Holy Father’, is currently signed to Mainland Block Party, a record label founded by music executive Tobi Mohammed.

Victony has since used his platform to advocate for strength and resilience. In 2023, he described the accident as a “blessing in disguise,” highlighting how it reshaped his life and deepened his passion for music.

Since the accident, Victony has undergone four surgeries, but his determination to keep creating music remains unwavering. He continues to inspire a new generation of Nigerian youth with both his sound and his story.

His journey serves as a testament to the power of purpose, public support, and the unshakable will to transform tragedy into triumph.
