Her victory in the highly competitive category was a proud moment for Afrobeats and the African music scene, as she triumphed over fellow Nigerian star Rema and South African hitmaker Tyla, both strong contenders with massive international followings.

Ayra Starr wins big at the BET Awards

Ayra Starr’s win is especially remarkable considering her previous nominations in past editions, where she narrowly missed out. This year, however, the Rush crooner’s hard work, consistency, and global impact finally earned her the recognition she richly deserves.

Though she walked away with one major win, the night came with a mix of highs and near misses. She was also nominated in two other categories, Best New Artist, which went to Leon Thomas, and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, claimed by SZA.

Meanwhile, Nigerian singer Tems, who was nominated twice in the Best Her category, lost out to American R&B star Summer Walker.

The night saw a celebration of music’s finest talents, with American rapper Kendrick Lamar emerging as the biggest winner, scooping five trophies out of his ten nominations; a testament to his continued dominance in the hip-hop scene.

Ayra Starr’s win marks a significant moment for African representation on the global stage. As she held her award high, it was not just a personal victory, but a win for Nigerian music, female artists, and the ever-expanding reach of Afrobeats.
