Arsenal women’s team recorded a shock 1-0 win over Barcelona to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy on Saturday in Lisbon.
Stina Blackstenius scored the only goal for the Gunners to lead them to their second Champions League title.
The goal was enough to end Barcelona’s dominance in the competition having won it twice in the last three seasons.
Arsenal won the trophy for the second time in their history after winning it in 2007.
Arsenal coach, Sleger was delighted to lead the club to victory in Lisbon.
She said: “We knew it was going to be a game of momentum shifts because we respect Barcelona, we know how good they are on the ball but we also know how good we are.
“So we knew that momentum was going to shift. Maybe other people were thinking about something else, but that’s what we believed. In all the phases that happened in the game, the mentality we showed, the resilience we showed, the effectiveness in all our actions, our belief, it was incredible.”
Arsenal captain Kim Little described the feeling as incredible while praising her teammates for their battling performance.
She said: “We just had an incredible run in the Champions League. It felt like our year, we played the game the way we wanted.
“In the other games, we had two legs and had time to adjust. We had one game today and had to execute the game plan, manage the space well and the whole team did that. I’m so proud.
“I’ll have sunstroke later, it was very hot! Definitely worse than England, and with this Scottish skin as well!
“We have an incredible squad, we showed that today. Especially with Beth and Stina coming on, then Lina and Lotte who saw out the game.
“To win that trophy, then to lift it with Leah – a childhood Gooner and like myself had been at the club a long time – that was really special.
“This is the ultimate for a club, but we’ve not won the league in a while, so we’re due one of them. We’ll enjoy this one first!”
It is the first time Barcelona have failed to find the net in 41 matches.
Arsenal finished second behind champions Chelsea in the WSL this season.
