The Lagos State Sports Commission has confirmed that no fewer than 1,000 students from selected primary, and secondary schools will participate in a series of events to mark the 2025 International Day of Sports for Development and Peace.

The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace, celebrated annually on April 6, was established by the United Nations General Assembly to underscore the power of sports as a tool for social development, inclusion, and peacebuilding.

Part of the activities line up for the three-day event is a debate, a competition, and an award ceremony, billed to take place on May 7, 8, and 10, respectively.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to providing an enabling environment that encourages inclusive youth participation in sports, regardless of social status or background.

The Director-General of the LSSC, Lekan Fatodu highlighted the importance of sports in the society.

He said: “Sports serve as a unifying tool, bringing everyone on board and ensuring that no one is neglected. It challenges stereotypes, gives voices to the voiceless, and fosters gender equality.

“The Lagos State Government, through the Sports Commission, has, over time, leveraged the power of sports in bringing youth into the limelight. It provides opportunities for talents to blend athletics with academics.”

After the Leadership debate on the opening day, participants will compete in Athletics, Swimming and Board Games including Ayo Olopon on the second day.

Pupils and students who performed exceptionally well in both debate and sports activities will get awards and certificates on the final day.
