Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has promised the club’s supporters that the club will invest heavily in the summer transfer window as they begin to identify the club targets.

The Gunners have struggled with injuries, and lack of depth this season with some of their key players missing out of action in recent months.

Bukayo Saka just returned from a three-month lay-off after suffering a hamstring injury against Newcastle United in December.

Arsenal’s inability to invest in the squad in the January transfer window despite struggling with injuries and lack of quality options drew criticisms from the supporters.

Arteta has now promised that the club will make big moves in the summer, while welcoming the new Sporting Director, Andrea Berta to the club.

He said: “It’s going to be a big one and we are very excited about it.

“The way we planned the five first summers, they were going to be very big and they were going to have different objectives because the turnaround of players and the objective of those windows was going to be different.

“But now when you are going to go again, we want to increase the depth of the squad but as well we want to increase the quality and the skills that we need to go to the next step.”

The Gunners have been linked with the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyökeres, Alexander Isak, Nico Williams, and Martin Zubimendi ahead of a busy summer window.

The Gunners confirmed the appointment of Andrea Berta as their new Sporting Director on Sunday, and Arteta is confident that the Italian will be a valuable addition to the team.

He said: “I think Andrea is a big addition to the club, a big addition to the team, a team that is already formed with a lot of great people.

“Every summer is big because it is an opportunity and especially because of the number of players we have in the squad right now that is necessary.

“But it’s a big summer for many things because first of all we have to maintain the good foundations that we have and then obviously how can we improve and evolve the team.”

The duo of Bukayo Saka, and William Saliba are approaching the final two years of their contracts, Arteta believes Berta, and the club will handle that to allow him concentrate on other things.

He added: Arteta added: “It’s very important but we’re going to leave all those questions for Andrea and make sure that he has his place and his role and he can fulfil it. Hopefully my influence will be in other aspects.”

Arsenal’s only realistic chance of winning a trophy is the Champions League, where they have a date with defending champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals next Tuesday.
