Lancashire Police arrived at the scene to find Mr Daintree lifeless and took time to neutralize the danger from the dog which could pose deadly harm.

The officers said that they were forced to shoot the dog to prevent further attacks from the animal.

Lancashire Police Superintendent Marie Jackson also offered her condolences stating, “This is an unfortunate event that resulted in loss of life and our thoughts are with Mr Daintree’s family.”

Superintendent Jackson also confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances that led to the said attack is currently being conducted.

Police are urging anyone with information to report to detectives, and apart from the regular officers who will patrol the area as usual, there will be more officers in the neighbourhood conducting investigations and others responding to community concerns.

The event draws attention to the XL bully breed that has been associated with new legal restrictions.

As of February 1st, it became unlawful for anyone located in England and Wales to possess an XL bully, unless they had an exemption certificate.

Owners are also bound by various rules and regulations such as neutering, and micro-chipping of the dog, and must ensure the dog is muzzled and restricted to a leash while in public.

The people of Accrington are still in a state of shock as the authorities probe into the devastating tragedy.
