Ohio Officer Connor Grubb Charged with Murder in Fatal Shooting of Pregnant Ta’Kiya Young
Blendon Township, Ohio – An Ohio police officer has been indicted on multiple murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman last August.
Officer Connor Grubb of the Blendon Township Police Department has been charged with four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter, court documents indicated on Tuesday.
The indictment comes after a tragic incident that happened on 24th August 2023 when Grubb met 21-year-old Ta’Kiya Young in a grocery store parking lot. Young had similarly been claimed to have shoplifted from the stores.
The body camera footage of the incident shows a heated exchange of words between Young and two police officers, which include Grubb.
First, officers are heard ordering Young out of her vehicle as shown in the footage. Despite their repeated orders, Young, who was in the driver’s seat, questioned the reason for their commands.
When a second officer stood in front of her car, Grubb was stated to have fired at the windscreen and shot Young. The shooting happened after Young tried to escape in the vehicle, which struck one of the police officers on the scene.
Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford initially stated that the case involved a car chase and attempted vehicle assault and the officer fired in self-defense.
However, the opinion of the jury investigating the case and their decision to charge Grubb with murder has an entirely different view of the tragedy.
Young’s family has since spoken of relief as well as pursuit of justice after the indictment. The family’s law firm called the grand jury’s decision a “solemn victory,” but said it is only the first step in the family’s quest for justice.
Ta’Kiya’s grandmother has been parenting two young boys since the event; her name is Nadine Young. She depicted the ordeal as ‘agonizing’ and called Officer Grubb an ‘arrogant cop’.
Nadine Young said that she wanted Grubb to get a life sentence because this would be justice for her granddaughter and all the family.
The event has led to probes into police behaviour and the application of force as a method of handling citizens.
The legal representative for the Young family was Sean Walton who was furious by the actions of the Grubb saying that Grubb did not follow the basic procedures taught to police officers where he could have defused the situation.
‘Everything he did made that situation worse,’ Walton said ‘That’s why Ta’Kiya was murdered.’ He also demanded for dismissal of Grubb from the force.
The Blendon Township Police Department has not given a statement to the indictment and has not responded to reporters’ requests for comment.
Grubb has been on administrative leave since the incident, and the other officer involved with the case has been returned to active duty.
According to NBC News, the case remains a matter that is still being discussed in the community, and this is due to increased discussions on issues to do with police conduct and measures of accountability.
