Like all 36 states in Nigeria, Lagos has its own unique Coat of Arms and Motto, as mandated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Lagos State Coat of Arms also known as the Lagos Logo is the official representation and seal of the government of Lagos State.

It was designed after the establishment of Lagos State, to reflect the nature of the state and its people.

If you want to know more about the Lagos State’s coat of arms, Keep reading to learn more.

Brief History of Lagos

Lagos is a vibrant metropolitan city located in the southwestern region of Nigeria. Back in the days of British colonial rule, Lagos was a significant economic hub.

The mega city was a thriving center of trade and commerce, and its importance could not be overlooked.

In 1960, as Nigeria was gaining independence from British colonial rule, Lagos played a crucial role in the journey to independence and became the capital of the newly formed Federal Republic of Nigeria.

As Nigeria continued to evolve and grow, so did the city’s population and infrastructure.

Today, Lagos is recognized as the world’s fastest-growing city and has become a bustling urban center attracting thousands of people from around the world for commerce, finance, and entertainment purposes.

Features of the Lagos Logo and What It Represents

Here are what the symbols and features of the Lagos Coat of Arms represent.

The White Cap (“Keresimesi”)

The White Cap, also known as keresimesi, is placed directly on top of the Lagos Logo and represents the symbol of authority that many areas in Lagos possess.

The Cap resembles a Christmas Cap, hence the name ‘keresimesi’ which translates to Christmas in Yoruba.

The “Akoko” Leaves

The base of the White Cap holds the Akoko Leaves, which symbolize longevity and are commonly used during the installation of Obas and Chiefs in Lagos State and throughout Yorubaland.

Cowries

The Cowries were used as currency prior to the introduction of coins and notes. They represent the earliest medium of exchange in Lagos State.

The background

The brownish-gold background beneath the Cowries represents the color of the foreshore sand found in various parts of Lagos State.

Fishing Activities

The fishing activity on the Lagos Logo depicts the traditional occupation of Lagosians and other inhabitants of the state.

Coconut Palm Trees

Two coconut palm trees situated on either side of the coat of arms. They represent one of the primary agricultural products of Lagos State.

The Wheel

The Wheel symbolizes industry, while the red background represents power generation in Lagos State.

The Motto: Justice and Peace

The official motto of Lagos State is “Justice and Peace.” “Justice” represents the importance of treating every individual fairly and without bias, while “Progress” signifies the hopes and aspirations of the people of Lagos State.

The three lines

The three lines that divide the shield on the Lagos Logo represent the past, present, and future of the state and its people.

Wrap Up

In conclusion, the Lagos State Coat of Arms serves as a visual storybook. It represents the state’s rich history, cultural diversity, and infinite possibilities.

As Lagos continues to grow and evolve, the Coat of Arms remains a powerful symbol of the state’s identity and its journey into the future.
