Chicago Police Area 5 detectives are searching for an unidentified gunman who entered through a rear door and fatally shot 61-year-old Fernando Herrera inside a Belmont Cragin apartment early Saturday morning.
Chicago Police are investigating a fatal home invasion that left a 61-year-old man dead on the city’s Northwest Side early Saturday morning.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 61-year-old Fernando Herrera.
The violent incident occurred shortly after 5:15 a.m. in the 3000 block of North Lotus Avenue in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood.
Investigators stated that an unidentified male intruder entered an apartment through a rear door.

Once inside the home, the suspect fired handguns at Herrera before quickly fleeing the scene.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the shooting and pronounced Herrera dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police reported that no other injuries occurred during the home invasion.

The gunman escaped through the rear entrance, and no suspect descriptions have been publicly released by authorities.
Area 5 detectives responded to the scene to collect forensic evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview neighbors.
No arrests have been made as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
