Katsina United players and club officials staged a dramatic protest on Wednesday over the non-payment of five months’ salaries, mere moments before their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match against Bendel Insurance.

The team publicly demonstrated their frustration ahead of the kickoff, shining a spotlight on the severe financial hardship they have faced while still being expected to perform in top-flight fixtures.

A source close to the team emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Five months without pay is suicidal, and yet these players are still expected to go out and perform.”

Despite the tense atmosphere and visible distress, Katsina United honored the fixture. The day, however, ended on a sour note as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Bendel Insurance. This loss only compounded the club’s difficult situation both on and off the pitch.

As of the time of reporting, the club management has remained silent, failing to issue an official statement regarding the prolonged salary arrears.

This incident sharply highlights the persistent financial challenges facing certain NPFL clubs. It reignites urgent calls for the league and football authorities to enforce stricter compliance with players’ welfare and contractual obligations to safeguard the careers and livelihoods of professional athletes.
