A tragic accident has occurred along Ijora Causeway in Lagos, where a 40-foot container truck overturned, crushing a commercial tricycle and killing two people, including a police officer. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, which took place earlier yesterday.
According to preliminary reports, the container truck lost control while trying to make a turn under the Ijora Bridge and fell onto a tricycle carrying passengers. The police officer and a female passenger were killed instantly.
LASTMA operatives and other emergency responders were at the scene and successfully rescued two other victims, including the tricycle operator. The two survivors were taken to Jimsan Hospital in Ijora with severe leg injuries.
Relatives of the deceased female passenger were seen at the scene retrieving her remains, while the body of the police officer was taken to a morgue in Yaba.
Irate onlookers attempted to set the container truck on fire, but a joint team of security personnel from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Police Divisions quickly secured the area, restoring peace and allowing emergency services to work without interruption.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, offered his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the two survivors. He also urged truck drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially when navigating bridges and busy roads.
