The convoy of Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, reportedly faced an attack from student protesters on Wednesday, January 14, in Abeokuta.

The incident occurred as Salako-Oyedele was en route to represent Governor Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the 35 Artillery Brigade Alabama, Abeokuta.

The protest was led by students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), who were demonstrating against delayed results, postponed NYSC mobilization, and increased tuition fees.

The institution’s management had earlier shut down the school and dissolved the student union leadership, prompting the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun Joint Campus Committee (JCC) to intensify protests.

According to the Ogun State Government, the protesters obstructed the deputy governor’s convoy, wielding sticks and other objects, and caused damage to security vehicles.

A statement by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, claimed the students became violent upon recognizing the deputy governor.

However, NANS Ogun JCC Chairman, Adeyanju Francis, refuted these allegations, asserting that students were peaceful until police officers allegedly attached to the deputy governor’s convoy opened fire on them. He accused the security personnel of injuring students and denied that the protesters were armed.

The situation escalated after this confrontation, with reports of vehicular damage and injuries on both sides. Further investigations are expected as the incident has heightened tensions between the students and the state government.
