The chaos began when individuals climbed the residence’s black gate, and the incident could be seen on video where they threw objects to the floor as well as break paintings.

Some of the looters even took some food from the catering dishes and danced with joy by lifting their hands and fists. Some of the people in the crowd were observed to be using their cellphones to record the incident.

Social media and live television coverage also painted a picture where protesters were later seen picking animals such as chickens, ducks, and rabbits off the property. Some of them took pictures with the animals as part of the uproar.

Monsur Ali, a garment worker who was among the people who stormed the residence, described the scene, saying, “We went there out of anger. Nothing is left there.” He recounted taking a plate during the looting.

The riots started with strikes over prized government employment opportunities. The riots degenerated into force once the police and other security agents threatened to use force on the striking employees.

These conflicts have led to the loss of lives with over 200 people killed. The frustration grew due to claims that Hasina was becoming more authoritarian during her 15 years in power.
