The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. has dismissed reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), clarifying that the facility is undergoing routine maintenance.

In a statement issued on February 7, NNPC explained that operations at WRPC Area 1 were deliberately halted on January 25, 2025, to carry out essential intervention work on select equipment, including field instruments affecting steady operations. The maintenance aims to ensure the production of quality petroleum products such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene.

“NNPC Ltd. wishes to clarify that there was no explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC). Any reports suggesting otherwise are completely false.

“On January 25, 2025, operations at WRPC Area 1 were intentionally curtailed to carry out necessary intervention works on select equipment, including field instruments that were impacting sustainable and steady operations. These intervention works are essential to ensure the production of on-specification finished and intermediate products, particularly Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene (Kero).” The statement reads.

NNPC assured the public that the maintenance is progressing as planned, with Area 1 expected to resume operations in the coming days. Meanwhile, AGO loading has continued at an average of eight trucks per day over the past 11 days, ensuring an adequate supply.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to uninterrupted product availability and thanked stakeholders for their patience during the maintenance process.
