A popular Nigerian medical expert, Aproko Doctor, has addressed the common question: Can Zobo cause miscarriage? According to him, while Zobo (hibiscus tea) contains many beneficial compounds, pregnant women need to exercise caution before consuming it.

Zobo is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, and Hibiscus acid. These compounds contribute to better blood pressure regulation, improved general wellness, and enhanced immune function.

However, when it comes to pregnancy, Aproko Doctor emphasized that expectant mothers need to “shine their eyes” and be careful.

Aproko Doctor highlighted several reasons why Zobo may not be safe for pregnant women:

  1. Uterine Contractions – Zobo has been linked to increased uterine contractions, which could raise the risk of miscarriage.
  2. Hormonal Disruption – Some compounds in Zobo can mimic estrogen, a hormone that plays a critical role in pregnancy. This could interfere with pregnancy hormones and potentially affect fetal development.
  3. Dehydration Risk – Zobo has diuretic properties, meaning it can increase urination. Excessive consumption may lead to dehydration, which is harmful to both mother and baby.

While studies have shown that Zobo can cause uterine contractions in animals, there is limited research on its effects on human pregnancies. Aproko Doctor pointed out that experiments are rarely conducted on pregnant women due to ethical concerns.

He advised: “If you are pregnant and your pregnancy has not passed three months, please avoid Zobo. After that, consult your doctor before adding Zobo to your diet. However, if you are not pregnant and still want to drink Zobo, please take it in moderation.”
