Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Olalomi, popularly known as Portable, has turned himself in at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, Lagos, after weeks of evading arrest.
Following his surrender, the Lagos State Police Command has contacted the Ogun State Police Command to arrange his transfer, as he faces charges stemming from an altercation with government officials in Ogun State earlier this month.
Background of the Case
The police declared Portable wanted after he failed to submit himself for questioning for two weeks following an incident on February 5.
The controversy began when officials from the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority (OGPDPA) were conducting a routine inspection in Sango-Ota, checking for illegal structures. Portable, who was on the opposite side of the road, allegedly taunted the officials, calling himself the “town planner” of Sango. His associates joined in, allegedly provoking the officials and forcing them to flee.
When the officials returned the next day, they discovered that Portable’s hotel had been marked as an illegal structure due to the lack of necessary permits. As the officials tried to explain the legal procedures to Portable’s father, the singer and his associates allegedly attacked them, blocking their vehicles and assaulting them.
The officers reportedly escaped to a nearby fuel station, where armed police officers were called in for backup. The Ogun State Police later arrested nine suspects linked to the incident, but Portable remained on the run.
Legal Proceedings & Portable’s Claims
The arrested individuals were arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abeokuta on multiple charges, including felony, assault, obstruction, armed violence, and intent to kill. They were each granted N5 million bail but remain in detention due to the strict bail conditions.
Meanwhile, Portable, in several viral videos, claimed that over 20 people, including his customers, were arrested and that their cars were confiscated. He also lamented that the closure of his businesses was negatively impacting his family and staff, emphasizing that he had been contributing to his community by funding streetlights and road repairs.
What’s Next?
With Portable now in custody, he is expected to be transferred to Ogun State to face questioning and possible arraignment.
