Nigerian duo of Karim Adeyemi, and Carney Chukwuemeka both scored for Dortmund in their 4-1 win over Freiburg in a 2024-25 Bundesliga encounter on Saturday.
Adeyemi opened the scoring for Dortmund with an unstoppable finish from a tight angle in the 34th minute.
Six minutes into the second half, Adeyemi assisted Chukwuemeka to make it 2-0, the Chelsea loanee’s effort was deflected into the net.
Serhou Guirassy came off the bench to make it 3-1 for his 25th goal of the season in all competitions.
Gittens put the icing on the cake with a well placed header with 12 minutes to go before Maximilian Eggestein scored a late consolation for the hosts.
It was Chukwuemeka’s first goal for Dortmund since joining the club on loan from Chelsea in the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old was delighted to open his goalscoring account for Dortmund, while highlighting the importance of the victory.
He said: “It was an important three points against a rival in terms of our league position. I honestly thought that I had squandered the chance with my first touch. Thanks to the grace of God, the ball went in. I’m grateful for that.”
His performance drew praises from Dortmund as the club took to X to hail him for scoring his first goal in his first start for the club.
Dortmund wrote: “Carney Chukwuemeka, take a bow. What a performance,”
The Austrian-born midfielder of Nigerian decent is yet to commit his international future to any country, he is eligible to play for Austria, England, and Nigeria.
He has represented England at the youth level but he is yet to get a call-up to the Three Lions.
Adeyemi has now scored four goals, and recorded four assists for Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season.
The Germany forward has scored nine goals in all competitions for the Black and Yellow including five in the Champions League.
He has urged the players to build on the impressive win to in other to end the season on a high.
Adeyemi said: “We needed to get back to basics: to fight and just play. We try to do that every week. You can see the results now: we’ve played very solidly in the last two games and deserved to win. We’re all in good form in attack, and that’s why it worked out today. We want to build on that and continue in the same vein next week.”
Dortmund will be back in action in the Champions League against Barcelona on Wednesday in the quarter-final.
The win moved Dortmund to the eighth position on the Bundesliga log.
